PGIMER Chandigarh: CBI Press Release

Press Release

New Delhi , 10.11.2012

The Central Bureau of Investigation has busted a gang which was allegedly indulging in & facilitating cheating, copying and manipulation in the entrance test of Post Graduate Courses in PGI, Chandigarh.

Based on source information, a surprise check was conducted by CBI in the examination centers in Chandigarh. It was found that some women were using sophisticated equipments like camera, phones, bluetooth and they were transmitting the question paper outside, using internet facility.

Searches were also conducted in certain hotels. Seven male persons who were allegedly receiving the images outside and co-ordinating the operation were found. It was revealed that these persons were getting the paper solved through experts based in Patna and Hyderabad and again communicating the answers to candidates inside using blue tooth devices, micro ear phones and sophisticated mobiles.

The experts located in Patna and Hyderabad, are also being probed by the CBI in a synchronized operation.

Laptops, micro earphones, sophisticated mobile phones, blue tooth devices, SIM cards, special clothes fitted with sophisticated devices inside, button-hole cameras, tablet computer, wireless ear plugs, medical books, electric solders, fitting equipments, ATM cards and cash etc. were recovered in searches.

The Preliminary information acquired so far that the gang had allegedly been involved in a number of similar rackets pertaining to national level entrance examinations earlier is also under probe.

PGI MD/MS Exams : 7 arrested for cheating

PGIMER Chandigarh, Students who wrote the MD/MS exam on November 10 after years of hardwork and dedicated preparation were shocked when they realised that some of their colleagues were involved in obtaining undue advantage by cheating using advanced gadgets. One girl apparantly had a device so precisely embedded into her ear that the CBI could gain access to it only by performing a surgery.

Update: Latest information reveals that more than seven were cheating. The students were supposedly from Tamil Nadu & Andhra Pradesh. The caught candidates mainly belonged to Sector 41. The CBI raid occurred during the exam and caused unnecessary inconvenience to other genuine students who were writing the exam.

Indian Express reports

The CBI sleuths on Saturday arrested 16 people, including seven girl medical students, using hi-fi gadgets to cheat during a post-doctoral degree examination conducted by the PGIMER at four different centres here. While the arrested girls were candidates appearing for the MD/MS examination, nine others were picked up from KC residency Hotel in Sector 35.
Those arrested from the hotel include Gurivi Reddy, Mahindra, Jagdeesh, Thamin Khan, Afroz, Siddhartha Subhadra, Promila and Rahemu Nnisa. As per CBI officials, Gurivi Reddy a resident of Hyderabad, is the mastermind behind the cheating gang, while the others are from Tamil Nadu and other parts of Andhra Pradesh.

The officials, however, said that the seven girl students had appeared for the exam only to take pictures of the question paper and get it leaked. The agency officials believe that there may have been some candidates at the examination centres who were to receive the answers but they are yet to be identified.

“The modus operandi of the gang involved the candidates taking pictures of the question papers through cameras in their clothes and sending them through mobile phones to other members in Patna and Hyderabad. These members solved the questions and e-mailed the answers back to the accomplices in local hotels, who subsequently flashed the answers to the mobile phones of the candidates in the exam hall,” said CBI DIG Mahesh Aggarwal.

He also ruled out impersonation and said that it was a case of cheating. “However further investigations are on and CBI teams are working on specific vital clues,” he added.

According to CBI officials, the agency’s anti-corruption branch had reliable information regarding cheating in the exams, following which, checking was conducted in the examination centers and the seven girls were found to be using sophisticated equipments like camera, mobile phones and blue tooth.

Raids were also conducted in city hotels on Saturday, which led to the other nine arrests. CBI officials said laptops, micro earphones, sophisticated mobile phones, blue tooth devices, SIM cards, special clothes fitted with sophisticated devices , button-hole cameras, tablet computer, wireless ear plugs, medical books, electric solders, fitting equipments, ATM cards and cash were recovered from the members of the gang in the hotel. The experts in Patna and Hyderabad have also been apprehended by the local CBI branches. Officials said the gang had been involved in a number of similar rackets .

Meanwhile, PGI’s official spokesperson Manju Wadwalkar said no decision had been taken on cancellation of the examination. “ It has not been decided. PGI has also decided to withhold the result of the exam which was to be declared on Sunday,” Manju said.

With incidents like this being reported year after year, students have started to question the vailidty of central and state exams. The pre-examination check using metal detector seems just a strategy to fool innocent students to think that exam is conducted fair. Students caught belonged to at least four centers at Chandigarh.

This is not the first time these incidents happen. Last year students were caught cheating in AIPGME. India has truly empowered women so they could make equal contribution in crime.
