While signing the 7.5 % reservation for Government school students, Governor of Tamil Nadu, made a shocking observation that 41% of students in Tamil Nadu study in government schools, only 0.14% are able to secure admission to medical colleges. The issue became political after he Governor delayed signing the draft sent by ruling AIADMK government headed by Chief Minister E.Palaniswamy. An executive order was passed to override the hurdle posed by Governor. This move comes as a relief to government students. NEET, which is almost impossible to clear without coaching, puts government school students at a disadvantage. It is important to note that Tamil Nadu implements 69% reservation.

NEET 2020, After so much hue and cry, NEET 2020 finally concluded. Students found the exam relatively easy compared to previous year except for Physics which they found to be relatively hard. States like TN had witnessed much resistance to NEET as the exams were based on CBSE/NCERT syllabus which the students weren’t familiar with. Since NEET was introduced to Tamil Nadu, the proportion of students qualifying for the exam in first attempt, those from rural background and those from disadvantaged section of the society has drastically declined.

States like Tamil Nadu are banking on exemption from NEET for admissions into MBBS. TamilNadu presents an unique case as the majority of the students study under State Syllabus but the NEET exam is based on CBSE syllabus. Its important that NEET UG and PG are under the scanner for not following the OBC reservation. This comes after all party representation was made from Tamil Nadu to implement OBC reservation. The supreme court made a controversial remark stating ” reservation is not a fundamental right”.
